Lionel Messi wins 2009 Fifa World Player of the Year
Argentina and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi is named Fifa’s World Footballer of the Year. Spain Takes the Honors in the List of 23-Probables. FIFA announced 23 players today for the FIFA Player of the Year 2009 Award. Spain is leading the pack in terms of the number of players selected from a single country (6), whereas Barcelona and Chelsea do the honors from the club’s point of view.
Cristiano Ronaldo, winner of the FIFA Player of the Year 2008 Award, has been
again nominated for the position. However, Argentinean Lionel Messi seems to have an edge over his Portuguese counterpart, as Barcelona’s striker had a wonderful season for the Catalans. He was also responsible for his club’s wonderful showing in the Champions League final against Manchester United, which they won eventually.
Other players, who look good to make it to the top, include Didier Drogba, John Terry, Wayne Rooney, Fernando Torres and Michael Ballack.
For the women side of it, Marta would be looking to make it 4 in 4 years, but she may get a tougher challenge from other 9 players.
With only five weeks to go for the revelation of the 5 best in both men and women football, there might be a lot to think about for everyone. They will be all be awaiting the big day on December 21, 2009 at the Zurich Kongresshaus.
