In the first rounds Dawson had been dominant and in the later rounds Johnson overtook him and in fact did give more damage to Dawson. But eventually Dawson was declared winner as he won more times; 7 to 5 with a score of 115-113; its this narrow margin that called for a rematch.

Chad Dawson though is an undefeated fighter in his career and believes that in this rematch also he would be able to outwork Johnson without any difficulty; he in fact improved his all-round fighting skills not just the offensive play.
