FIFA gives Chelsea 1-year transfer ban

Chelsea hit with transfer ban until 2011 following shock Gael Kakuta ruling. Chelsea cannot sign new players for 2 registrations that implies until 2011 January it cannot sign up new players.

According to the football governing body FIFA, the club was found guilty of signing in Gael Kakuta the French player who had to breach his contract with Lens club. The 18-year-old had joined Lens 2 years back in 2007. Its for this reason that the Premier League club was given a sentence of new signing registration ban.

However, there is a chance that Chelsea could appeal against FIFA’s ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The breach of contract by Kakuta means he needs to pay a fine of 780,000 euros according to FIFA’s DRC (Dispute Resolution Chamber). However, Chelsea is equally responsible for inducing Kakuta to breach the contract with his former club Lens.

It came to light when club Lens had lodged a complaint with the football governing body that Chelsea had signed Kakuta 2 years back. The club sought compensation from player for breach of the contract and urged the sport’s governing body to take action against the English club.
