However, England will be quite happy to have come thus far in the tournament and it will be their first semi-final at world cup level after they have lost the World Cup finals to Australia in 1986.

Germany, has had ample experience of playing several semi finals and Markus Weise, the German coach believes that his team will win this upcoming one against England and even win the finals, to become the first nation to win world cup for 3 times, consecutively.

England cannot be written off and they have huge experience as well and players including Ashley Jackson, James Fair, Tindall and Barry Middleton, have been impressive and will not give an easy win to Germany. I find it somewhat surprising that, prior to this match being played, the airwaves were saturated with details of the match – focussing, of course, on what England were going to achieve.

Lo and behold, subsequent to a hammering at the hands of the Germans, there is a dearth of reports on TV and radio about the outcome of this match. If you wonder why so many nationalities, my own included (Scottish), are cynical about England’s prospects in any major sporting event, one need only focus on the arrogance of the English pundits pre-event.

I wholly support any British triumph in any field. I am proud to be British and, in this instance, had a genuine interest in England reaching the final. I sought, in vain, the result of this match after hearing the plethora of reports on the radio and tv previous to the event.

A bit more balanced reporting, before and after events, would help the cynics and, of course, those who support the British cause, such as me, in these events.

Here’s to a British triumph in the World Cup, The Open and Wimbledon.
