The ICC Champions Trophy 2009 will take off from September 22, 2009 in South Africa. The One Day International cricket tournament will be played from September 22nd to October 5th. Top eight teams will play fifteen matches in the tournament and the venue for the matches will be the Centurion Park and The Wanderers and the winning team will be awarded with prize money of $4 million.
The eight teams are divided under two groups;
Group A consists of India, West Indies, Pakistan and Australia
Group B has South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and England.
The top three teams of the tournament namely SA, India and Australia are holding the top three positions in the ICC ODI rankings respectively and each of them are strong contenders of the mini World Cup and also the ranking.
In Group A the teams will see an opportunity in the weak West Indies side. Pakistan are displaying inconsistent performance this year and the two teams left are India and Australia; India recently won the Compaq Cup in Sri Lanka and the Kangaroos are having a ball against the Ashes, out of the seven ODI’s the Australians have already won six of them, which has gained them the number one position in the ICC ranking and one more win will cement their top position. India and Australia are most likely to enter the knock out rounds. India will miss their star batsman Virender Sehwag but captain MS Dhoni and his men will be a bundle of surprises.
In Group B South Africa and Sri Lanka look stronger; inconsistent batting performances has become a major concern for the New Zealand captain a Daniel Vettori and team England have been simply outclassed by the Australians in the seven ODI series and their senior players Andrew Flintoff and Steve will be missing the tournament, which weakens the side. Proteas will miss their key player Herschelle Gibbs but Captain Graeme Smith is confident of winning the trophy and one cannot ignore the Lankans too, they are very talented but inconsistency plagues the team.
The South African pitches are favorable for the quick bowlers and the batsmen of all teams should watch out for the short balls; judgment holds key to batting success of such deliveries. It will be an even contest between the ball and the bat, and the team that comes with an all round performance will take away the coveted trophy. And mind you SA has an awesome record on their home ground, and they are a tough side to beat in their home.

Despite the fact that one-day matches are unpredictable cricket fans believe that the 2009 will either go to SA, India or Australia, as these three teams are in too good form.

Some of the Batsmen we’ll miss watching in the 2009 Champions Trophy are Virender Sehwag, Chris Gayle, Andrew Symonds, Kevin Pietersen, Abdul Razzaq and Andrew Flintoff…
India’s Champions Trophy campaign has suffered a major setback even before it has started with Yuvraj Singh fracturing his finger during a practice session in Johannesburg. The injury will sideline him for six weeks and Virat Kohli will fly to South Africa as a replacement as soon as the formalities are completed
