The Chinnaswamy Stadium, named after the former president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is the home of the Indian Premier League (IPL) II runners-up Bangalore Royal Challengers.
It hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for the Royal Challengers but after a successful outing in South Africa the team is expected to draw a huge crowd in the third edition. The IPL 2010 organizers are planning to price the tickets anywhere in the price range of Rs.250-Rs.2500.
The foundation stone of the stadium was laid in 1969 and the construction work of the stadium started in 1970. By 1974, the stadium achieved its Test status and hosted West Indies in a half-built stadium.
The stadium was renovated before the 1996 World Cup and quarterfinal match between India and Pakistan was the first match to be played under lights at the venue.
The stadium has witnessed many landmark events – be it the debut of Gordon Greenidge and Viv Richards in 1974 or local lad Anil Kumble’s historic 400th Test wicket. The Chinnaswamy Stadium till date remains one of the most happening place for cricket.
Located between the Queen’s Road and the Police Parade Ground, the Chinnaswamy Stadium lies in the heart of the IT city. In fact the Stadium has become one of the important landmarks of the city.
Stadium Layout: The stadium has two tiers, barring the clubhouse stand, and has a seating capacity of 40,000. The cub house stand has three tiers and houses the dressing rooms, the corporate boxes and the press box. The clubhouse also has rooms for stay and Karnataka Cricket Association (KCA) uses these rooms for domestic visiting teams and other officials. There are 10 entry gates to the stadium making it easier for spectators to enter the stand easily.
Parking facilities are very convenient at the Chinnaswamy Stadium and the Police Parade Ground and the nearby Maneckshaw Ground are used for parking facilities during international matches and the IPL.
