ESPN to share La Liga’s US TV rights with GOL

La Liga on ESPN. The La Liga 2009-10 season, which is all set begin by the end of August has some good news- the soccer matches can now be watched on the ESPN. ESPN has rights to many FIFA events, which include the Confederations Cup, World Cup 2010 and even Women’s World Cup. Besides it has rights to telecast the European Championship and the Major League Soccer games.

This premium sports channel has now sub-licensed the coverage rights of many matches (the number is not disclosed as yet) from the La Liga from the America’s GolTV.

GolTV originally has the credit of telecasting six seasons of the Spanish soccer mania. This deal between ESPN and GolTV is viewed as ESPN’s attempt to bloat the distribution of Deportes through increased cable networks and for the GolTV, with that limited distribution to kind of recoup its investments.

A whopping 114 matches will be featured online on ESPN 360. The channel is also set to share rights with Spain’s Copa del Rey. The matches will be telecasted on alternate weekends on GolTV and ESPN. ESPN2 is likely to telecast around 20 matches every season and ESPN Deportes will feature two or three matches on weekends.

The El Classic matches between Barcelona and Real Madrid will be simultaneously aired on GolTV and ESPN. With ESPN’s new deal LA Liga will reach larger audience and the El Classic matches are predicted to gain greater viewership this season. This season of La Liga will give Ronaldo and Kaka a greater platform in the US.
