The second Test match between England and Pakistan will be played at Birmingham. England goes into the game with a 1-0 lead in the series after they had won the first match by a whopping 350-plus run margin. For Pakistan to be able overcome such a pounding will need a lot of wherewithal and grit, not to mention a much improved batting performance.

Pakistan’s performance in the previous game was all about their lack of batting skills. The openers have barely fired and the middle-order is too conspicuously young and inexperienced. The selectors have brought Mohammad Yousuf back, but the question is whether he will be able to get to England at such a short notice and feel good to play in the next three days.

What will please the Pakistani supporters is their bowling line-up that should test the opposition. Even in the first game, Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif had bowled well enough to begin with, but without too much support from the leg-spinner Danish Kaneria, it had become difficult for them to shut out the English side. Saeed Ajmal’s selection is a foregone conclusion after Kaneria was shown the door.

England will need to do nothing different from the previous Test match and they have named exactly the same side as before. They had a good batting show put up, and apart from that, they also had James Anderson find form to be able to destroy the opposition. The Birmingham pitch will be easier on the batsmen, but could have some more bounce for the bowlers. this should allow the likes of Stuart Broad, and more importantly the six and a half foot high, Steven Finn to come into their own.

The hosts should start off as favourites in the game, but the change in personnel could augur well for the visitors.
