It is Federer’s 3rd consecutive Grand Slam and his 6th US Open finals; he reached the last stage beating determined Novac Djokovic 7-6 (3), 7-5, 7-5. It wasn’t an easy walk to the finals. Federer worked very hard to be here. He had never lost at the Flushing Meadows that must be keeping the reigning champ cool, but Del Potro is no less in ranks. He had beaten Federer’s biggest threat Rafael Nadal and that by itself speaks volumes on the resilience of Argentina’s Jaun Martin Del Potro.

He stormed to finals thrashing Nadal in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, and 6-2 in the semi finals. The gigantic 6-seeded looked just too much for Rafael Nadal and it had been one semi final with the least competition in the recent times; worst ever for defeat in the Grand Slam from the time he’s been playing. He had run into problems of knee injury and looked off his top form. He had serious problems with serve and Del Potro made fewer mistakes.

The 20-year-old Del Potro was quoted of saying: “This is the best moment of my life.” He admitted, “I was so focused every moment because Rafa is a great player and can run for 5 or 6 hours. I am not so strong, but I did my best and I am in the final.”

He will meet the defending champion in the finals that will be played today. Rains pushed the men’s singles finals and womens doubles finals to Monday at the Flushing Meadows. Federer has a great record of winning 41 matches here, but he will need to play an improved Del Potro which makes it worth the wait and watch game!
