Sri Lanka has beaten Pakistan by 36 runs in the first ODI in Dambulla. Now the stage is set for a riveting encounter, come Aug 1. Match will be played on the same ground.

Although Pakistan lost, they can take a few positives from the game. Abdur Razzaq has returned to international Cricket in a big way and is performing with both ball and bat. Shahid Afridi, the unquestioned hero of their World Cup Twenty20 triumph, returned to give a neat all-round performance. And their bowling showed spark, even if batting couldn’t balance the act.

Pitch may again favor early swing and it may well be another low-scoring contest. Sri Lanka, which depends ever more on spin, found their unlikely heroes in Thushara and Kulasekara. Muralitharan’s accuracy is another bad news for Pakistan. One wonders how even after so many years of facing him, very few players from the subcontinent can tackle him, let alone other countries.

For Pakistan, Gul and Aamer are bowling spearheads. Pakistan would ideally look to set the target more than chasing. That depends on the toss though. It is only when Pakistan is pushed to the wall that they come with guns blazing. One waits to see whether that happens tomorrow.
