Pakistan vs West Indies -- ICC Champions Trophy 2009 Preview

Group A: Pakistan v West Indies at Johannesburg
Sep 23 (14:30 local, 12:30 GMT)
West Indies will open their Champions Trophy campaign tomorrow against strong opponents Pakistan. They are without the likes of Gayle, Chander Paul or Bravo; they are minus their star players. What’s still impressive is that their new captain Floyd Reifer is confident that they may be a bundle of surprise at South Africa. It could be true; in a sense that none of the teams had chance to analyze the new squad’s strengths and weaknesses.
Floyd’s team is ready for a Pakistan opener. Reifer says, “We have watched Pakistan a lot on the television. We have been able to come up with some tactics but they have never watched us play, so that’s good for us. There is a nervous energy in the camp but we are not scared of anyone. Sounds very confident. They can play and pray for their chances as Pakistan captain Younis Khan has been ruled out of playing the first match after sustaining a fracture of his finger. Reifer further urged his inexperienced boys to take inspiration from the side’s performances in the earlier season’s Champions Trophies.
West Indies were champions in 2004 and were runners up in 2006. But the team came to South Africa after defeats by hosts as well as Sri Lanka in the warm up matches.
Pakistan had been rusty no doubt, but they are gearing to make a grand comeback. They have their bowling strengthened with Asif joining but their captain’s absence is a big blow to them, nevertheless with Abdul Razzaq, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, they are definitely stronger than the current WI team and will go into the match as pre-match favorites.
